Common Things That Households Forget to Recycle

Our MD Ellie made a profound observation in her recent blog post around going zero waste: The shampoo bottle she was using is technically a single use plastic. This got the rest of the company thinking about particular objects in our home that we don’t usually think about when it comes to recycling.

That’s why we’ve put together an inforgraphic to highlight some of the other commonly forgotten recyclables that fill up our bathrooms, offices and homes! You may be surprised by some of them, but we’re sure that once you’ve taken a look at some of the interesting facts below, you’ll want to join in yourself!

  • We produce well over 300 million tonnes of plastic every year – 50% of which is only for single-use purposes! – Plastic Oceans
  • It’s estimated that over 90% of all the seabirds have some form of plastic within their stomachs – and it isn’t just birds that are falling afoul of plastics within the ocean. It’s affecting a plethora of aquatic animals and their habitats – Plastic Oceans
  • The current household waste recycling rate in England is 43.2% (as of 2017/18). This may sound good, but the UK won’t hit the target stated by the EU for this to be raised to 50% by 2020 – Statista
  • In 2017, the UK consumed 44.1 billion (That’s right, BILLION) drink stirrers. By 2030, it is predicted that this could increase to 59 billion. That’s a shocking growth of 47% – Statista
  • 46% of people surveyed think the government should spend more to improve the range of recyclable items. In a survey undertaken by IPSOS, 46% thought that the most effective way to reduce the problems caused by unnecessary plastic and packaging would be to force government spending to improve the range of recyclable items – IPSOS
  • The recycling of plastic water bottles is on the rise – according to RECOUP, a plastic recycling charity, they have said that 351,907 tonnes of plastic bottles had been collected from households for processing in 2017 – that’s a rise of 2.5% on the previous 12 months! – Sky News

So, without further ado, if the above has made you want to do more for the environment, the planet, the animals and everything else in between, We here at Colson Transport, stand beside you. Take a look at our infographic below:
